Who the Encode Plus is for
The Encode Plus (model BE499WB) shares its keypad, built-in Wi-Fi and full-deadbolt design with Schlage's other Encode lock, but it adds Apple home key support and Thread connectivity for Apple Home. If your household uses iPhones and you want Wallet-based unlocking, this is the model built for it. If nobody in the home uses Apple devices, much of what you pay extra for goes unused, and I will mention that before the install.
Fitting a full smart deadbolt
The Encode Plus replaces your existing deadbolt entirely. I check bore size, backset and door thickness, then test how the bolt meets the strike with the door closed. The lock's motor dislikes friction, and a strike that is a few millimeters off shows up later as failed locking and short battery life. The lock also runs a handing step to learn your door direction, which I confirm before moving on.
Two apps, two jobs
The Schlage Home app connects the lock to your Wi-Fi and manages codes, history and firmware. Apple Home is a separate pairing that adds the lock to your Home app, enables Apple home keys and lets you build automations. They are not the same setup, and doing one does not complete the other. I take you through both on your own phone so the lock belongs to your accounts, not mine.
Apple home keys in practice
Once set up, a home key lives in Apple Wallet on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch, and you hold it near the lock to unlock. Other household members get home keys when they are added to your Apple Home. Home keys need a supported device and current software, so I check each phone that should have access and help add the key to the Watch if you want to use it that way.
The role of a home hub
Remote control and automations through Apple Home depend on a compatible Apple home hub, such as a HomePod or Apple TV, set up in your home. Separately, the Schlage Home app can control the lock remotely over its built-in Wi-Fi. If you do not have a home hub, remote access still works through Schlage Home; Apple-based automations are what you would be missing.
When the phone is not the answer
A phone can be dead, forgotten or borrowed. The keypad remains the most dependable everyday backup, and guest codes — scheduled or temporary — are the simplest way to let in a contractor or a visitor who does not use an iPhone. The keyed cylinder is the last-resort backup when batteries are exhausted, and it can be rekeyed so it matches other locks where the keyway allows.
Sorting out problems
If the keypad and home key respond but the bolt struggles, the fix is mechanical: strike, alignment or batteries. If the lock is fine at the door but missing in Apple Home, the issue is the hub or Thread network. If Schlage Home shows it offline, look at Wi-Fi coverage at the door. Separating these saves time and avoids replacing a lock that is not faulty.
Pricing
Service call starts at $49. Final pricing depends on the type of service, lock, vehicle, hardware, complexity of the job, and any required parts.
