A full deadbolt replacement
Unlike a retrofit lock, the Encode (model BE489WB) takes out your old deadbolt completely. The bolt, the exterior keypad assembly and the interior unit are all new. That means the door prep has to suit it: I check the bore size, backset and door thickness against the product before removing anything. On doors that never had a deadbolt, or have unusual prep, I tell you what extra work is involved first.
Getting the bolt right
The Encode throws the bolt with a motor, and the lock notices resistance. A strike that is slightly off, or a door that sags on its hinges, leads to failed locking attempts and faster battery drain. I test the bolt by hand with the door closed, then adjust the strike or hinge screws until it moves freely. The Encode also runs a handing step so it learns which way your door locks, and I confirm that it has completed correctly.
Wi-Fi setup with Schlage Home
The Encode connects directly to your home Wi-Fi and is managed in the Schlage Home app — remote lock and unlock, notifications and history, without a bridge. It needs a usable 2.4 GHz signal at the door. Front doors are often the far edge of home coverage, so I check signal strength at the lock itself. If it is weak, I tell you honestly: the lock will still work locally, but remote features will be unreliable until coverage improves.
Access codes for the people you trust
The keypad is the Encode's everyday strength. You can create codes for family, recurring codes for a cleaner or dog walker that work only on scheduled days and times, and temporary codes for guests. The app shows who used which code and when. I set up your first codes with you and show you how to remove one, which matters as much as creating it.
Mechanical problem or connectivity problem?
When an Encode 'stops working', it helps to separate the two. If the keypad responds but the bolt struggles, that is mechanical — alignment, strike depth or low batteries. If the lock works at the door but the app shows it offline, that is Wi-Fi. They need different fixes, and treating a strike problem as a network problem wastes time and batteries.
Backup when batteries run low
The Encode runs on AA batteries and warns you in the app and at the lock as they run down. The keyed cylinder outside and thumbturn inside still work without power. Because the cylinder is standard Schlage, it can be rekeyed so the backup key matches your other doors where the keyway allows.
What this model does not do
The standard Encode does not support Apple home keys; that is a feature of the Schlage Encode Plus. If Apple Wallet unlocking matters to you, it is worth deciding before installation rather than after.
