Before installation
Most smart-lock problems start at the door, not the lock. I check that the door closes and latches without being pushed or lifted, measure the backset and door thickness, and look at the existing deadbolt prep and strike alignment. If the bolt is dragging on the strike now, a motorized bolt will jam later, so that gets corrected first. I also confirm that the specific Schlage Encode model being installed suits the door as it is built — hole size, thickness range and interior clearance are model-dependent and get checked against the product, not assumed.
Setup and testing
After the hardware is mounted I complete the setup that model actually supports — pairing to the app, joining the network, and adding codes or credentials where the product provides them. Some models connect directly, others use a bridge or hub, and generation matters. I confirm what your unit supports rather than promising a feature set. Before I leave, the lock is cycled from both sides of the door with the door open and closed, and any codes you want set up are tested.
Your existing hardware
Whether your current deadbolt or exterior hardware can stay depends on the product. Some Schlage Encode installs reuse the existing deadbolt and only replace the interior side; others replace the complete deadbolt including the exterior cylinder. If keyed-alike keys matter to you — for example one key for the front and back door — tell me before the install and I will confirm whether that is possible with the hardware involved.
