Why the deadbolt matters more than the lock
The August motor turns the same tailpiece your hand used to turn. If the bolt already needs a push on the door or a lift on the handle to throw fully, the motor will stall, drain batteries quickly, and report jams. Before mounting anything I check that the bolt extends and retracts freely with the door closed, that the strike hole is deep enough, and that the door has not sagged in the frame. Fixing a strike or a hinge takes minutes and is the difference between a lock that works for years and one that frustrates you in a week.
Will it fit your deadbolt?
August is designed to fit over many common single-cylinder deadbolts, using a mounting plate and a tailpiece adapter chosen for the brand of deadbolt you have. Double-cylinder deadbolts (key on both sides) and some mortise or handleset designs are a different situation. I confirm your deadbolt against the adapters in the box before removing the old thumbturn, and if the combination is not a good match, I tell you before anything is taken apart.
Wi-Fi built in, or a bridge
Not every August lock connects the same way. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock has Wi-Fi built into the lock itself. Earlier August models talk to your phone over Bluetooth and need the separate August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge, plugged in near the door, for remote locking, notifications away from home and voice-assistant control. If you already own a bridge-style model, I place the bridge where it gets a reliable signal to both the lock and your router, which is often the part that decides whether remote access works day to day.
DoorSense: open versus locked
DoorSense answers a different question than the lock does. The lock knows whether the bolt is thrown; DoorSense tells you whether the door itself is open or closed. It relies on a small magnet or sensor positioned on the frame, and it needs calibrating with the door closed. I set that position carefully, because a sensor placed too far away gives false 'open' alerts and can interfere with Auto-Lock deciding when the door is safe to lock.
Auto-Lock and Auto-Unlock, set up sensibly
Auto-Lock locks the door after a delay you choose, and Auto-Unlock uses your phone's location to unlock as you arrive. Both are convenient, and both work best when the door latches cleanly every time. I walk through the settings with you rather than turning everything on by default — a short Auto-Lock delay on a door that does not always close fully is how people get alerts about a bolt hitting the frame.
Sharing access
Access through August is managed in the app: you can invite household members and give guests access that is limited to certain times. If you want a code people can type in rather than an app invitation, that needs a compatible August keypad, which is a separate accessory. I help you set up the first users so you understand how to add and remove people yourself.
Your keys still work
Because the outside of the door does not change, every existing key keeps working. That is useful as a backup, but it also means anyone who has ever had a copy can still get in. If you are unsure who holds keys, rekeying the cylinder at the same visit keeps your August setup and gives you a fresh set of keys.
Pricing
Service call starts at $49. Final pricing depends on the type of service, lock, vehicle, hardware, complexity of the job, and any required parts.
