Establish whether this is really all keys lost
If a Ford key still starts the engine, you have a working credential and the request is for a spare, even if its lock buttons do not work. If an Intelligent Access fob is present but the car does not detect it, a weak fob battery or vehicle-side fault may be relevant. If the key turns but the vehicle will not start, the symptom alone cannot prove that registration is missing. Tell me whether every physical key and fob is gone, whether a second fob behaves differently and whether the car has power. This determines whether I should assess AKL rather than schedule button pairing or misdiagnose a no-start.
PATS, keyheads and Intelligent Access are not one Ford key
On equipped keyed-ignition Fords, PATS/SecuriLock recognizes an authorized coded key for starting. An Integrated Keyhead Transmitter can combine a mechanical blade, electronic credential and remote-entry buttons. Intelligent Access on equipped push-button models instead uses a proximity fob, often with a mechanical insert for emergency door entry. Depending on year and trim, an F-series truck, Escape or Explorer can have different key types and security requirements even within one nameplate. I ask about ignition style, model year and original key appearance before considering a compatible replacement.
Why a cut blade is not a completed recovery
A metal key or insert can address physical access to the door, and on a turn-key Ford it may operate the ignition lock if cut for the installed cylinder. It cannot alone establish PATS authorization on a vehicle that requires an electronically coded key. Likewise, an Intelligent Access emergency insert can give mechanical entry but does not provide the proximity credential for push-button starting. Remote keyless entry buttons are another check: working door buttons do not prove the car will start, and a key that starts might still have a remote fault. I describe each needed function before quoting the full AKL scope.
Two existing keys is not a universal AKL rule
Certain Ford owner-manual instructions for adding a key require two already programmed keys; an owner with no keys obviously cannot use that add-a-key path. Professional AKL options are evaluated under the exact Ford's security system and authorization requirements. Some PATS key-erasure procedures may require two keys to be programmed afterward, but that does not apply to every model or mean every AKL customer must automatically buy two keys. I do not promise one universal recovery procedure or use a rule for one generation to diagnose another. Availability is checked before the appointment.
Lost versus stolen: questions about the old key
If the missing Ford key might be in someone else's hands, tell me before scheduling. On some supported systems, key-management options may include removing previously registered credentials; whether that is available and what it affects must be assessed for the particular vehicle. It is not a promise that every lost key can be erased or that an old mechanical blade can be made physically unable to open an unchanged lock. Changing electronic authorization and changing a door cylinder address different risks. I discuss supported options and their limits with the verified owner rather than imply that a newly registered key automatically disables every older key.
What I need before coming to the vehicle
Have the Ford model, year and trim, VIN, vehicle location and whether it uses a conventional ignition or start button. If you have a photo of the missing key, readable part or FCC ID from an old fob, or a broken housing, share it as a clue rather than treating appearance as proof of compatibility. Let me know if the door is locked, the battery is flat or any locks were replaced. Registration or title and matching photo ID are required to verify possession and ownership before key work. I check whether appropriate parts and authorized service are available for that exact Ford before arranging mobile service across Denver Metro.
Confirm the result on the actual Ford
For a supported recovery, I check physical entry and blade operation where a blade is supplied, plus whether the vehicle recognizes the new credential for starting. On Intelligent Access models I check applicable proximity behavior; on an integrated keyhead I check its remote lock/unlock function. Tailgate, liftgate, panic or remote-start functions are considered only if the vehicle and correct key are equipped for them. If more than one new key is involved, each intended key should be checked individually. If a door works but the engine remains unauthorized, the AKL service is not complete; if the key is recognized but the car still will not start, vehicle diagnosis may be needed.
Scope, price and the right related guide
A missing-last-key job can include access, a compatible part, mechanical cutting and electronic authorization, depending on the Ford. Service call starts at $49. Final pricing depends on the type of service, lock, vehicle, hardware, complexity of the job, and any required parts. I confirm the scope and any on-site limitations before work; no one time or price fits every F-series, Escape or Explorer. The Ford car-key replacement guide covers general replacements and adding a spare, including the distinct add-key case. If you still have a working starting key and only its buttons fail, the Ford key-fob programming guide is more relevant. If all keys are gone, call with the vehicle and ownership details for a Ford AKL assessment.
