Placement decisions made before the safe moves
Placement is decided first because it is the hardest thing to change later. The considerations are the route in, the wall the safe backs onto, visibility from windows and entryways, distance from exterior walls where moisture and temperature swing more, and whether the room is one you can work in later when the lock eventually needs service. A safe wedged into a corner it can never be pulled out of is a problem deferred, not solved.
Access, clearance, and door swing
The door needs room to open fully, and full-size gun safes have wide doors. Clearance is checked against adjacent walls, shelving, water heaters, and door frames, and the handing is chosen so the door opens toward the natural approach rather than into a wall. Interior clearance matters too: a door that only opens partway makes the top shelf unusable.
Floor assessment
The floor decides the anchoring method and sometimes the placement itself. A concrete slab is the straightforward case. A wood subfloor over a joist system needs the joist layout considered, and upper floors need the load thought through before the safe goes up there. Finished flooring — hardwood, tile, laminate — needs protection during the move and a decision about anchoring through it. Where floor capacity is genuinely in question, that is flagged rather than guessed at.
Anchoring, where it is appropriate
Anchoring is the part that stops a safe from being tipped and removed with the contents inside. Most safes have pre-drilled anchor holes in the floor of the body, and the fasteners are matched to the substrate. Anchoring is not always appropriate — some locations, floor types, and rental situations rule it out — and where it does not happen, that limitation is stated plainly rather than glossed over.
Leveling and alignment
A safe that is not level does not simply look crooked; the door can swing on its own, and over time the boltwork can bind against a door that no longer sits square. Leveling is done in both axes with shims where the floor is uneven, and it is checked after the anchors are set, since tightening down can pull a safe out of level. The door is then swung and the bolts are cycled to confirm free operation.
Safe setup after it is in place
Setup covers the interior: shelving arranged for what is actually being stored, door organizers fitted where the model supports them, and any accessories seated so they do not foul the door. If the safe includes a dehumidifier or light provision, it is positioned and its power routed sensibly rather than left as a trailing cord in the way of the door.
Lock setup and owner walkthrough
The factory code is replaced with an owner-chosen combination — leaving a factory setting in place is one of the most common oversights on a new safe. On an electronic lock that means setting the user code and, where supported, any additional user or manager codes. On a mechanical dial it means a combination change performed to procedure. Every setting is tested repeatedly with the door open, then the owner operates it themselves before we finish.
Limitations worth knowing
Not every location can take a safe: narrow stairs, tight landings, and some upper floors are genuine constraints, and route access sometimes decides the room. Anchoring into some floor assemblies is not advisable. Rental properties may restrict drilling. These are assessed on site, and where a location will not work we say so before the safe is committed to it.

Cost is driven by the safe's size and weight, the route and number of turns or stairs, the anchoring substrate, whether flooring protection or shimming is needed, and whether lock setup and accessory work is included.
