Symptoms that point to a mechanical lock problem
The common ones: the dial has to be run a number or two past each mark before the lock accepts it (drift), the dial turns roughly or grinds, the combination dials correctly but the handle will not move, the dial spins freely with no feel at all, or the dial has physical play or wobble at the ring. Dial, ring, and spindle issues
The dial and spindle are the parts most often damaged, because they are the parts people can reach. A knocked or forced dial can bend the spindle, and a bent spindle binds the wheel pack or changes the effective dialing position. A loose dial ring shifts the index mark, which makes a perfectly good lock look like it has the wrong combination. Both are checked before the lock body itself is suspected.
Combination problems versus lock-body problems
If the combination is simply wrong or forgotten, that is a safe-opening job, not a repair. A true repair case is when the combination is verified correct and the lock still fails: wheels that slip on their drive, a worn or damaged fence and lever, a broken drive cam, or contamination and old lubricant inside the wheel pack. Distinguishing the two is the first diagnostic step.
How the lock interacts with the boltwork
A dial lock only releases a small bolt; the safe's boltwork does the actual work. When the lock is proven to retract but the handle still won't turn, the fault is usually downstream — a binding bolt carrier, a dropped relocker triggered by an earlier impact, misalignment from the safe being moved or settled, or a door that is loaded against its frame. Repairing the lock does not fix boltwork, so both are checked.
